ACS Courses and Instructors: American Art History with Alexa Brooks

The American Art History course is for advanced English speakers to practice and improve their language skills while learning about 20th century and contemporary American art. The course examines the development of artistic movements that reflect American culture while revealing the persistent artistic objectives and a variety of trends and influences that have guided artists through this lengthy period.
An overview of key American artists and movements is presented in slide lecture format as well as texts and video. Students will be familiarized with the proper terminology and vocabulary related to modern art and critique. Via discussions, individual presentations, essays and debates, students will practice their oral expression, listening and reading comprehension, and writing skills. The ultimate aim of the course is that students will be able to knowledgeably express artistic ideas in English as well as have a solid understanding of artistic movements in 20th century America. Featured artists will include Georgia O’Keefe, Edward Hopper, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman, Chuck Close, Jeff Koons, and Kara Walker.
Alexa Brooks is a professor of English and American culture at the International Institute. Before moving to Madrid in 2011, she was a studio art professor at various universities in her home state of Maryland and is currently online adjunct faculty at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky. In 2013 she earned a master’s degree in Contemporary Spanish Art History from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. She also has a master’s of fine arts degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a bachelor’s degree from Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island. In addition to teaching, she is an artist and graphic designer.

El curso de Historia de Arte Americano está dirigido a hablantes avanzados de inglés y su objetivo es practicar y mejorar sus habilidades idiomáticas a la vez que aumentar su conocimiento sobre arte americano contemporáneo (siglos XX y XXI). En el curso se estudia el desarrollo de los movimientos artísticos y cómo reflejan la cultura americana a la vez que se ponen de manifiesto los objetivos artísticos y la variedad de tendencias e influencias que han guiado a los artistas constantemente durante este periodo. Un panorama de artistas americanos y movimientos claves ofrecido a través de presentaciones de diapositivas, textos y vídeos. Los estudiantes se familiarizarán con la terminología y el vocabulario adecuado relacionados con el arte contemporáneo y con la crítica. A través de charlas, presentaciones individuales, ensayos y debates, los estudiantes practicarán su expresión oral, comprensión auditiva y lectora además de la expresión escrita. El principal objetivo del curso es que los estudiantes puedan expresar con conocimiento ideas artísticas en inglés además de tener un entendimiento sólido de los movimientos artísticos del siglo XX en América. Antes de trasladarse a Madrid en 2011, fue profesora de Bellas Artes en varias universidades en el Estado de Maryland y actualmente es profesora adjunta online en University of the Cumberlands en Williamsburg, Kentucky. En 2013 realizó un máster en Historia del Arte Español Contemporáneo en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Es licenciada en Arte por Salve Regina University en Newport, Rhode Island y cursó el máster en Bellas Artes en Maryland Institute College of Art. Además es artista y diseñadora gráfica.
