American Cinema is a multi-skills approach to language learning at the advanced level using American Cinema as a backdrop. This course is designed to not only enhance the student’s knowledge of American cinema, but to create dialogue about issues surrounding it. By analyzing films and texts, the student will improve writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills.
At the end of the trimester, students successfully completing this course will be able to analyze films using cinematic language and be able to give opinions, written and orally, more confidently about films and filmmaking. They will also have a greater understanding of American Cinema in terms of its historic place within contemporary American culture and its relation to and reflection of societal movements and changes. This trimester in The New World the focus will be on how immigration has influenced and is represented in American film.
Anita Haas is a Canadian teacher and writer living in Madrid since the nineties. She has been teaching at the International Institute since 2005, and at the Universidad Pontificia de Comillas since 2010. She has published one book on film Eli Wallach: Vitalidad y Picardia, with a prologue by Clint Eastwood, and co-published two John Phillip Law. Diabolik Angel and Eugenio Martín. Un autor para todos los géneros with her husband, Carlos Aguilar. She has also published two novelettes, Creating Florinda and Make a Wish, Sophie! as well as poems, stories and articles in both English and Spanish. She has formed part of the jury in several film festivals. In 2015 she won three awards for short fiction.

American Cinema es una aproximación multidireccional al lenguaje inglés, dirigida al nivel avanzado con el cine americano de trasfondo. Este curso está diseñado no sólo de cara al conocimiento del cine americano, sino también para crear conversaciones sobre aspectos diversos que se relacionen con él. Analizando películas y textos, el estudiante aprenderá a escribir, leer, hablar y escuchar. Al final de cada trimestre, los estudiantes que lo finalicen con éxito habrán aprendido a analizar películas usando el lenguaje específico, así como a defender opiniones, escritas y habladas, sobre el cine y los cineastas americanos. Tendrán un formación mayor y mejor sobre el cine americano, en términos históricos y artísticos, pues lo contextualizarán dentro de los movimientos y cambios sociales. Este trimestre en The New World el foco está puesto en cómo la inmigración se refleja e influye en el cine americano.
Anita Haas es una profesora y escritora canadiense instalada en Madrid desde la década de los noventa. Imparte Inglés en el International Institute desde el 2005, y en la Universidad Pontificia de Comillas desde el 2010. Ha publicado en solitario el libro de cine Eli Wallach. Vitalidad y picardía, con prólogo de Clint Eastwood, y dos en colaboración con su marido Carlos Aguilar, John Phillip Law. Diabolik Angel y Eugenio Martín. Un autor para todos los géneros. También ha publicado dos novelas cortas, Creando a Florinda y Pide un deseo, Sophie, así como una diversidad de poemas, relatos y artículos en diferentes publicaciones, tanto en español como en inglés. Ha formado parte del jurado en varios festivales de cine, y en el año 2015 ha ganado tres premios al mejor microrrelato.
