American Expression is designed for advanced learners of English who are interested both in improving their English expression and comprehension skills, as well as deepening their knowledge of American culture. The course is designed to examine, interrogate, and challenge one fundamental aspect of American identity each trimester: Prosperity (Fall), Liberty (Winter), and Equality (Spring). Students engage with these vital elements of America’s self-image through cultural products that clearly define them, further organized according to a coherent theme. While these core concepts do not change, the focus taken in examining them does; in this way course materials are never repeated, and the cultural terrain discussed is constantly expanding. Learners are given many opportunities to practice and perfect their oral expression (primarily through structured debates, discussions, and group and individual presentations), their English writing skills (via short reaction papers written in response to a work or topic and blog entries), as well as their reading and listening comprehension (through the analysis and interpretation of films, music, and literature.) By exploring the materials used, students will gain a deeper appreciation of the complexities and contradictions of American society, while being confronted with some examples of the richness of American culture.
Andrew Bennett (PhD) teaches English and American culture at the International Institute, where he coordinates the American Cultural Studies Program (ACS) and runs a variety of library and American Space Madrid activities, including the English Reading Circle and the Discussion Group for Teens. He has over ten years of teaching experience gained in a variety of contexts, from primary school to university. He earned his PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Texas at Austin in 2013, and his bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and English from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee in 2003. He has been living in Madrid intermittently for over a decade.

American Expression está concebido para alumnos con un nivel avanzado de inglés, motivados tanto por mejorar sus destrezas de expresión y comprensión en inglés, como profundizar su conocimiento de la cultura norteamericana. El curso ha sido diseñado para examinar, interpretar y cuestionar un aspecto fundamental de la identidad norteamericana cada trimestre: la Prosperidad (otoño), la Libertad (invierno), y la Igualdad (primavera). Los alumnos abordan estos elementos esenciales de la auto-imagen norteamericana a través de productos culturales que la definen, y estructurados en torno a temas específicos. Aunque estos conceptos centrales no cambian, sí lo hace la perspectiva desde la que se abordan; de esta manera los materiales nunca se repiten y el terreno cultural examinado se extiende permanentemente.
El curso proporciona a los alumnos numerosas oportunidades para practicar y perfeccionar su expresión oral (especialmente a través de debates estructurados, discursos, y presentaciones individuales o en grupo), expresión escrita (redacciones breves hechas en respuesta a un tema y “blog posts”), además de la comprensión lectora y oral (a través del análisis y la interpretación de obras de cine, música y literatura). Gracias al trabajo con materiales originales, los alumnos logran una apreciación más profunda de las complejidades y las contradicciones de la sociedad norteamericana, al tiempo que se enfrentan a manifestaciones de la riqueza de la cultura norteamericana.
Andrew Bennett (PhD) enseña inglés y cultura norteamericana en el Instituto Internacional, donde coordina el American Cultural Studies Program (ACS) y dirige varias actividades vinculadas con la biblioteca del Instituto y American Space Madrid, como el English Reading Circle y el Discussion Group for Teens. Tiene más que diez años de experiencia como profesor, adquirida en una variedad de contextos, desde la enseñanza primaria a la universidad. Obtuvo su doctorado en Literatura Comparada en la Universidad de Tejas en Austin in 2013 y su licenciatura en Filosofía y Filología Inglesa de Rhodes College en Memphis, Tennessee en 2003. A lo largo de la última década ha estado viviendo en Madrid de manera intermitente.
